Jane Hermansen, Outreach and Network Manager at Mayo Clinic Laboratories in Rochester, Minnesota, discussed the 2014 Protecting Access to Medicare Act (PAMA) in MedicalLab Management. When PAMA went into effect in January of 2018, it was with the expectation that nearly every laboratory in the country that performs testing for Medicare beneficiaries will realize a decrease in reimbursement, and that in most states, Medicaid reimbursement was also likely to decrease. This brought to light a list of factors for hospital leadership to review when considering the long-term financial viability of their outreach programs.
