United Healthcare Implements new Requirements for Providers

Announced in the January 2021 Bulletin, United Healthcare (UHC) is giving providers three months to interface with a laboratory that is part of the UHC Preferred Lab Network (PLN). “Beginning April 1, 2021, for commercial plans, providers with an electronic medical record (EMR) or electronic health record (EHR) will be required to allow at least one Preferred Lab Network (PLN) provider integration to the EMR or EHR.”

The current list of PLN laboratories is comprised of commercial laboratories and several esoteric reference laboratories. This may be confusing for providers, as they may be receiving testing through PLN laboratories through their current laboratory provider. Also, UHC patients may already be receiving testing through non-PLN laboratories, as stated on the UHC website, “Members continue to have access to labs that are part of our extensive lab network even if they are not part of the Preferred Lab Network.” The bulletin does not provide any details regarding the EMR or EHR integration.
